With the start of a new school year for many, I've decided to start a blog called Walking Around Sfumato. You're probably wondering what that title even means. Well, Sfumato is a painting technique that Leonardo Da Vinci perfected during the Renaissance. It 's how you blur the lines between your subject and your background. This blog is about blurring the lines between work and play while I walk around the Earth. I have a unique lifestyle traveling between the East Coast and 4962 miles away to my other home, Honolulu, Hawaii, the 5-0. I am a professional musician and I play with the Hawaii Symphony, the Reading Symphony in PA and many others.
I frequently receive questions about my lifestyle when I make new friends or talk to old friends that I haven't seen in a while. This blog is going to be about my interests and a glimpse into my world for the next year. Readers can expect one blog post per week usually on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Never a Monday since it's the day most musicians are off. And I may miss a Tuesday since I am frequently flying for 11 hours+ and I love the solitude of airplane travel.Yes, I stay unplugged, no internet during that time. I will not tell you how to live your life, just write about my interests which aren't just trumpet, hiking and complaining about United.
I've chosen the first day of school to launch because I still think in School Years even though the last time I went to formal school was quite a while ago! I play in symphony orchestras for a living and we also live on a "school year" season, September-June. My husband is a school teacher and I have always felt that freshness of September as a time to start something new. I'm a firm believer in keeping different aspects of your life fresh by doing something different. It can be anything that starts a new, hopefully healthy, physical or mental habit like: starting an exercise program, a new diet, reading a new book, taking an online course, studying a new etude book or piece.
I've been inspired to start a blog from reading three very different authors of books and blogs: Austin Kleon 's books, Steal Like An Artist, and Show Your Work. I also read Matt Kepnes's blog Nomadic Matt. He is a travel blogger. I took one of his online photography courses. My friend Mary Jo has a wonderful crafting blog called This Wonderfilled Life.
Thanks for reading so far. I hope you have many happy moments this week and you are as comfortable as you can be.
