Welcome to the Second post of Walking Around Sfumato. Today I am going to write about the deodorant I make and use. As the summer comes to a close, and I make my way 4962 miles away to a slightly balmier climate, I am going to need deodorant. Yes, I make my own and have for quite some time. It's easy, cheap and healthier for me than what is most commonly, commercially available. It only has two ingredients.
About 11 or 12 years ago, I switched to "natural" deodorant after reading some articles about the possible negative side-effects of the most popular brands. The biggest problem for me was the use of aluminum with connections to the developments of breast cancer and Alzheimer disease just to name a couple. Through the years, after reading that these "natural" brands sold out to larger corporations that just started adding other things that I didn't want my body to absorb, I decided to try making my own. Obviously, there are probably unwanted ingredients in many things we encounter everyday that we have no control over. And those things I have to let go of if I don't want to walk around paranoid about germs and disease development. My deodorant is something I can control, so I decided to make it. I love it and it makes me happy to use.
When I first googled how to do this I found many articles and recipes that had ingredients that I didn't have on hand. I didn't know what arrowroot was. I didn't have cornstarch. The recipe I base mine off of is from the wellnessmama.com. She has a great site full of all kinds of natural remedies and recipes. Check her out! My recipe is 3 Tablespoons of coconut oil and 4 Tablespoons of Baking Soda. When it is above 75 degrees in the room that the coconut oil lives in, mix them together in a container. I use a glass jar. Then, I use my finger or a spoon and mix until the baking soda lumps disappear. Next, I put it in the fridge to solidify for at least 10 minutes. Then I take it out and leave it on my shelf at room temperature. That's it, any 3 to 4 ratio and you have it! For my travel size container, I use the 3 to 4 ratio with 1/2 teaspoons. If it is below 72-75 degrees, coconut oil is solid. When that happens, I mix the two ingredients in a small pot, using a spoon to mix, over a very low heat on the stove until the coconut oil is melted. Then transfer it to my glass jar and put it in the fridge.
